The plane is rumbling contentedly and it makes my eyelids heavy, but I want to finish this before we land.
We took off from New York this afternoon, and I’ll post this when we land in Germany. I haven’t been on a flight this long since middle school, and I was surprised by how nice it is. We got a pillow and blanket, and my headrest bends to create a space to lean. The food was pretty good too.

We’ve just spent the better part of three days at our orientation. Soon I’ll be able to find north using just tree moss, I’m so oriented. The alumni group leaders taught us some words in Russian, and we talked a lot about safety and cultural immersion and respect. It mostly boiled down to “don’t be an idiot” but I sure could use the reminder sometimes. It was really great to talk to the alumni and find out more about what to expect.
Anna, one of our teachers, was at the orientation and is the one chaperoning us. There are 24 of us to keep track of, but we’re trying not to make it too hard for her.
We are 2,323 miles from our destination, according to my screen. We’re flying far north, near the Arctic circle, and the sun has been rising for hours without getting any higher. It’s beautiful.

I should try to sleep—we’ve been told to sleep whenever we can, since we can’t sleep until the train to Kirov tomorrow night.
In Germany I’ll turn off my data, and that’s it. Just the blog from then on. I’m nervous, almost more nervous than excited, but I think I’m ready for these six weeks. It doesn’t matter, really. Ready or not, here I come.
